Twitch Overhauls Guidelines on Sexual Content

Twitch, the leading live-streaming platform for gamers and other content creators, has announced a major update to its community guidelines that aims to combat harassment and sexual content on the site. The new policy, which took effect on December 13, 2023, replaces the previous one that was issued in February 2018.

According to Twitch, the new policy is based on a standard level of coverage for attire and context, with exceptions for certain situations. The policy states that streamers are not allowed to be fully or partially nude, including exposing genitals or buttocks. However, streamers can wear clothing that is appropriate for a public street, mall, or restaurant, such as undergarments, intimate apparel, or outerwear. The policy also prohibits streamers from focusing their broadcast around sexual content or in-game nudity, and users from engaging in simulated sexual activity or erotic roleplay in gameplay.

Twitch also clarified that gameplay or visual modifications that include nudity or sex content, such as de-censor patches, are prohibited even in otherwise allowed games. Additionally, Twitch said that it will monitor contextual elements such as stream titles, camera angles, emotes, panels, overlays, and chat moderation to ensure compliance with the policy.

The new policy comes after months of feedback from the Twitch community and streamers about the need for more transparency and consistency around what is expected on the platform. Twitch said that it wants to support safe and welcoming communities where live content creators can thrive regardless of their genre or style.

Twitch also emphasized that it will take a holistic look at any channel that receives reports for breaking the community guidelines based on sexual content or harassment. The company said that it will not tolerate using this policy as a basis to harass streamers on or off Twitch. Furthermore, Twitch said that it will enforce harsher penalties for conduct deemed to be hateful or abusive towards other users.

The new policy has received mixed reactions from the Twitch community. Some streamers have expressed relief and appreciation for the update, saying that it will help them create more diverse and inclusive content without fear of being censored or banned. Others have criticized the update as being too vague and restrictive, saying that it will limit their creative freedom and expression. Some have also questioned whether the update will actually make a difference in reducing harassment and sexual content on Twitch.

Twitch said that it welcomes constructive feedback from its community and streamers as it continues to improve its policies and services. The company said that it hopes that the new policy will foster a more positive and respectful environment for everyone on Twitch.
